My
Cancer Trek
aka
The Tokyo Roast

On 11/10/06, at age 59,  I found that I had       prostate cancer.
As the most common cancer in men, it kills 15% of those who get it.
My case, a most uncommon one, led me to Tokyo.
I hope my story can help others.

PSA Results
It’s in and it is good. PSA is 0.1. This is a very good PSA following HIFU and a good indicator that there aren’t a bunch of cancer cells ravaging my body as I write this.

A Lesson in Appreciation
Joe put things into perspective. “Think about how much better off you are than when you had a tube running out of your dick and a bag around your leg.”

Great Progress ah but A Few Side Issues
It has been 3 days since my catheter has come out and things are going very, very well. Sure there are some problems. I am leaking. Bending, squatting, lifting, and sometimes laughing, create a sudden feeling of wetness that you gotta hope doesn’t show.

I can PEE!
At this point I have to hope for the best and just enjoy not having that tube stuck up in me and that damn bag on my leg.

More Bag Wars
I could return to the meeting and just watch the reactions as the smell permeated the room. I suppose I could try to find some sort of humor in that. I could picture it as a scene in a movie comedy.

Disenchantment with Doctors
He responded by saying that he wasn’t interested in research out of some Eastern European journal. I noted his adding the word "Eastern" and what he was implying by that. HIFU treatment and research is actually carried out mainly in Germany, Japan, Austria, and Great Britian.

Long Term Catheterization
Next came the bad news. As he pushed the camera in he had me look at the screen. My urethra lining has some real damage. He said that if we let it heal as is, the scaring tissue would probably close up the urethra completely.

"Oh my god, is he a eunuch?" My friend Don said that was the frist thought he had years ago when an old friend said he had prostate cancer. This gets to the heart of the biggest, but most difficult to talk about fear that men have when facing prostate cancer treatment.
